Job-Specific Topics to Focus On

Based on standard Fire Officer exam patterns :

1. Fundamentals of Fire

  • Fire Triangle- Heat, Fuel and Oxygen is what’s need to create a fire. Remove one part of the equation, and the fire dies out. What isCombustionThe process by which something is burning releasing heat and light. The fire will stop and can be removed or put out simply by stopping the supply ofheatand fuel or oxygen.
  • The Flash point The lowest temperature at which a liquid in an open beaker can be vaporized and then flashed or burned but will be put out when the source of ignition is removedThe Ignition Temperature The lowest heat required to cause an item to burn without an exterior supply of heat (called anauto igniting temperature).
  • Heat CapacityThe amount of heat that will raise the temperature of substance 1 C or 1 K. High Heat Capacity Water Heats slowly and loses heat slowly Low Heat Capacity Brass or steel Heats up fast and lose heat fast How can we transmit Heat via the following methods. Radiation Transferring Heat via the EM wave Convection Heattransfer via hot gas or liquid. Conduction Heat transfer through solids.
  • How can we prevent a Fire with the Following methods.
  • Cooling Taking Heat Away from the fire lowers the burning object’s temperature. Asphyxiation (smothering) Reducing Oxygen Supply. Starvation Take away Fuel supply. Type’s of Fire extinguishers?
  • Dry Chemical- the common abc or bc extinguishers. They interrupt the chain reaction of the fire.CO (carbon dioxide) Smothers fire by eliminating the oxygen supply, then cooling.
  • Water Type(fire-aid)- for ordinary combustibles, wood and paper etc.
  • Will not extinguish oil and grease (spreads it), electrically operated equipment (electrical shock can travel up the hose) Foam Suffocates a fire by creating a barrier between the air and the fuel. It can be used on class A and B fires Pull the lever and stand a few feet away from fire P.A.S.S (pull the pin, aim the nozzle, squeeze the handle and sweep) Hydrant- A stand pipe, connected to the water supply of the building with valves, to which firemen connect a hose for supplying water to extinguish a fire or fire fighting hoseconnection in a building through which firemen can get water to put out a fire. Sprinkler Smoke detector that uses heat to cause the apparatus to release water automatically on fire. Pull Station- A manual switch that is pushed to turn on an alarm. 1 pull trigger 2 Evacuate the building 3.
  • Call the Fireman.
  • Fire alarm is ringing and what do you do. Evacuategently Do not take the elevator.

8. First Aid and Burns

  • Immediate Action: Call 911 and provide information (burn location, depth, victim’s age, cause of burn).
  • Do NOT:
    • Apply cold water, ice, or butter (cold can damage tissue and delay healing; butter traps heat).
    • Apply any heat (this increases damage).
  • Run cool water—not cold—over the burn to alleviate pain and swelling.
  • Disrobe burning clothes that are not adhered to the skin.
  • Apply a thick covering that does not have a fluffy texture (such as a bed sheet or blanket), making sure that it is not hot.
  • Take off any jewelry near the burn site to avoid constriction due to swelling.
  • Do not use any creams without the instruction of your doctor.
  • Severe Burns: In case of severe blistering and oozing, go to the hospital right away.
